The institution is a Spanish entity engaged in the organization of arts and sciences projects that promote the cultural tourism and dynamism of the province of Valencia. It was founded in July 1996 as a result of a change in company name from Vacico (Valencia, Ciencia y Comunicaciones), a trading company run by the Government of Valencia. The institution manages and operates five main sections of architectural complex that are open to the public: L'Hemisfèric (The Eye of Wisdom), the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum, L'Umbracle (A Viewpoint Walk), L'Oceanogràfic (Underwater City), and the Palau de les Arts (Coliseum for the 21st Century). L'Hemisfèric shows three audiovisual performances: representations of astronomical phenomena in the Planetarium, IMAX giant-screen films and state-of-the-art Omniscam Laser displays at the Laserium. It conducts courses, scientific lectures and exhibitions on astronomy, as well as hosting meetings for organisations. Príncipe Felipe Science Museum is a cutting-edge museum with interactive exhibitions that all share the philosophy of Do touch, do think, do feel. L'Umbracle's upper section holds a tree-shaded central garden with a balcony on the northern side that affords a magnificent panorama of the City of Arts and Sciences. L'Oceanogràfic is the largest marine center in Europe, offering a thrilling underwater journey that represents all the main marine ecosystems of the planet, from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, continental waters to the icy waters of the Arctic and Antarctic, through temperate and tropical habitats. Palau de les Arts provides the City and Region of Valencia with the best route into the international arts circuits, particularly those of opera and major musical and theatre performances. The institution's headquarters is located in Valencia. Customers of the institution include educational institutions and practitioners, media industry, arts and culture industry, commercial sector, municipal sector, and tourism sector.
